TAGGED! is a science and art project about Radio Frequency Identification (short: RFID). It comprises a thesis text and an art installation both being part of the work for my European Media Master of Arts degree at the Merz Akademie Hochschule für Gestaltung Stuttgart (Germany) in 2005.

In the beginning I was interested in so called "smart objects". It occured to me that "smart" has become a fashionable term being used as an attribute for many different things - cars, kitchen supply, dietary pills or toys, just to state some examples of my research. Soon I came across articles about RFID technology also being described as "smart".

My goal was to find out more about RFID: what it actually is, how it works, why it is so controversially discussed, what the future developments could be and how these might affect society as a whole and the individual. Another area of interest was, how RFID can be used as a new tool within a narrative context, which resulted in the art project.
